GT Wokshop: Literature Through Translation
The Gratiaen Trust is thrilled to announce an innovative full day workshop in Colombo. The Literature Through Translation project is designed for all working Sinhala to English and Tamil to English literary translators in Sri Lanka. A first of its kind, the programme will include two parallel workshops, one for Tamil to English led by Pudhumaipithan Memorial Award laureate Kalyan Raman and a Sinhala to English training led by renowned Prof. C. S. Wickramagamage. To join us on January 19th 2025 in Colombo.

About the facilitators:
Kalyan Raman
Kalyan Raman, recipient of the 2017 Pudumaipithan Award, will lead the Tamil to English residency. With over two decades of experience translating Tamil fiction and poetry into English, his work has introduced notable writers like Ashokamitran, Perumal Murugan, and Poomani to a broader audience. He has also translated numerous Tamil poets, including contributions to an anthology curated by Kutti Revathi featuring forty poems by forty Tamil women poets.
Prof. Carmen Wickramagamage
Professor Wickramagamage is a translator, editor of translations, and teacher of translation studies. As a teacher, she has coordinated and taught in the University of Peradeniya (from 2002-2006) and continues to offer a course on Translation Theory and Practice at the postgraduate level in the University. She was the Chief Editor of the Gratiaen Trust sponsored project to translate into Sinhala/Tamil the stories contained in the Lankan Mosaic: Translations of Sinhala and Tamil Short Stories (ed. by Ashley Halpe, M.A. Nuhman, and Ranjini Obeysekere) and published by Three Wheeler Press in 2005. She has also served as a member of the panel of judges for the HAI Goonetileke Prize for Translation awarded by the Gratiaen Trust in 2003 and 2004 and the State Literary Awards to evaluate literary translations into English from Sinhala several times. Her translation of Sunethra Rajakarunanayake’s Podu Purushaya into English as Metta: A Story about Love, won the State Literary Award for Best Translation into English from Sinhala in the Creative Writing Category in 2012.
